Approximately fifty vehicles have been marked with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the Germany's municipality of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.
Cars, building surfaces and postboxes were defaced, in some cases with swastikas, they stated in a release.
Officers report they were contacted late on Wednesday, when a man noticed that a car in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been covered with a reddish fluid.
The substance had been placed in the shape of a swastika, they reported.
Officers then found numerous other marked cars and building exteriors in the nearby vicinity.
Nazi symbols are prohibited in Germany under legislation outlawing the public exhibition of Nazi symbols.
Officials state initial examinations suggest the substance was most likely human blood.
"At present there remains no clue as to its source; officials are currently not cognizant of any injuries in relation with the incident," they added.
Municipal representatives said they were trying "to resolve the incident" and have appealed to the public for details.
A senior political figure commented the incident rendered him speechless and needed to be resolved promptly.
"This event hits the core of Hanau and revives the wounds of the right-wing terrorist attack five years ago," he stated on social media, referring to the killing of nine individuals by a shooter focusing on individuals of migrant background in 2020.
