Nepal's Political Scene Witnesses Significant Alliance Formed By Media Personality and Former Musician Mayor

In a notable development ahead of next year's general election, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition emerges in the aftermath of widespread and fatal youth-led protests that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Tackle Youth Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to focus on the grievances raised by the new generation. This commitment comes after the turbulent anti-graft protests that took place in September, which led to significant casualties.

"Consensus must not be what a leader wants, it must be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was finalized.

The late summer revolt was triggered by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a catalyst for deeper discontent stemming from years of slow growth and persistent allegations of systemic graft in politics.

Details of the New Electoral Agreement

According to the official pact, the roles for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread discontent with the country's established political class. He has previously served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's current political transition. He played a role in setting up the caretaker government that came to power after the previous administration was dissolved.

Broader Government Discussions Underway

In a separate event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend held consultations with a number of major political figures. These discussions involved former prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the period of the protests.

After these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that conducting a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The statement reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring a safe and fear-free environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
