The musician contributes £25,000 cash award to grassroots music venues

The artist receiving the award in his hometown
Sam Fender received the honor last month in Newcastle

The star has given the entirety of his twenty-five thousand pound Mercury Prize prize money to the Music Venues Trust, which operates to protect the Britain's small concert spaces.

Fender was awarded the cheque on 16 October as his third album People Watching was declared the best record of the past year.

Fender has opted to hand the money over to the MVT, in acknowledgment of the essential function grassroots venues had in his initial steps.

"I would not have achieved what I am doing today if it wasn't for all the gigs I played around the region, and beyond, when I was starting out," remarked Sam Fender. "These venues are legendary, but they are struggling."

Beginning in 2023, at least 150 of these venues have ceased operations – approximately 16% of the whole industry in the UK.

Over the past year, major artists like Pulp, Coldplay, Katy Perry and Sheeran have all aided the trust in its initiatives to help venues survive, by adding a minor surcharge to their ticket prices, which benefits smaller concert halls.

He also joined in, generating over £100k on his 2024 arena tour to help thirty-eight grassroots venues across the UK.

The money helped spaces that were confronting imminent closure due to challenges stemming from flooding, fires and family tragedies, as well as regulatory hurdles, legal disputes and noise complaints.

Some locations were granted financial assistance in modernizing facilities and sound and lighting systems that directly benefitted musicians and fans.

"The notion that money from concerts in big venues helps the local stages, where it begins for performers like me, is just common sense," the star has stated.

The musician is not the first artist to donate his Mercury Prize prize money to worthy causes.

In Pulp earned the prize in the year 1996 for their record Different Class, frontman Cocker declared that the band would give their winnings to the organization War Child.

During 2002, rapper and singer Ms Dynamite shared her bounty across a few good causes, including the children's charity and a Sickle Cell charity.

"Additionally, I donated a thousand pounds to my local community centre, to their classes, because I did gymnastics when I was a child and they needed updated gear," the artist explained to the media.

Previously, the band donated their winnings to the youth organization that nurtured their group, in addition to other independent music bodies.

Also the 1994 recipients the group donated their winnings to a charity for MS after a friend was identified with the condition.

"The victory was quite enough," remarked vocalist Heather Small. "The prize was the cherry on top but we didn't require the bonus, because we had the main prize. So our success touched the lives of others."

Last week, the MVT shared it had rescued two small stages in the South East, by placing them under community ownership.

One venue in that area and the other in Bristol were acquired under the public acquisition scheme, which is supported by Arts Council England and music fans who buy "stakes" in the buildings.
